I am curious to the subspecies of rattlesnake that I have. I caught him/her, wild. I am feeding it mice/rats. Is there anything else I need to know about its diet?

If its the one on your profile it looks to be an oreganus ssp (northern or southern pacific rattlesnake) depending on where it was found. FYI I believe California prohibits venomous reptile ownership though (they have lots of strick keeper regs) so you may want to check with someone regarding the legality of the animal. Good luck

Bakersfield, CValifornia. Kern, County. Also the laws I read stated an individual may keep up to 2 of any particular species, without permit so long as the species in native to California. I have a my space with more pictures of the rattler and a Kingsanake that I rescued from the roads. Thank you very much for your prompt responses to my questions.

You are correct about California laws, You are permited to keep two of any native venomous species without a permit. BUT you do need to check your local laws as alot of souther california counties and cities have impossed bans on venomous ownership within their respected area's. So check with your local Ordinances and laws as well to be sure.
I looked at your profile, and that is a Southern Pacific Rattlesnake. I also noticed that you mentioned a breed and release program as being a potential future for you. Again check your laws, most area's of California have made it illegal to release captive born snakes into the wild, even if that snake is native to the state.
