Do Komodo Dragons possess any venom capabilities and are there any recorded fatalities from Hila Monsters or Beaded lizards?

Komdo dragons do not possess any venom only a nasty cocktail of bacteria that reside in their mouths. As far as deaths being attributed to gila or beaded lizard bites I do not know of any, but would think there have been a few over the years, probably very few over many years.

Charles (you were posting when I was), you should check out Brian's web page too. I use it as a discussion topic in my biology classes to talk about what we 'know'. Dragons do have rudimentary venom production, but it works.

I am unaware of any confirmed fatalities due to a Heloderma sp. although many websites state that the bite is potentially fatal. The evolution of helodermid venom and venom glands is somewhat different from that of snakes from what I understand - The venom gland is in the mandible. The symptoms of most bites are swelling and severe pain.

Joshua, I was unaware of the latest research into Varanid venom production. I checked out the website and also did a little "surfing" the web to find out more information. I was still under the impression that bacterial infections from open wounds caused by the bites of the dragons was their weapon. Thanks for information.

I do recall reading of at least one Heloderma fatality. I believe alcohol & the phrase "Hey y'all, watch this" were both in play.
