During a trip to the Amazon savanahs in 1999, I saw a snake in a tree on an Avocado plantation which looked like an Elapid but was not a Coral. What could it have been?

John, there are hundreds of snakes that would fit your description.
You might want to purchase a copy of "The Venomous Reptiles of Latin America." by Jonathan A. Campbell, William W. Lamar. It is one of the best refrences out there.
The newer and more expensive "THE VENOMOUS REPTILES OF THE WESTERN HEMISPHERE IN TWO VOLUMES," by
Jonathan A. Campbell and William W. Lamar would be even better.
Or, if you happened to take a photo of this unknown snake, you could post it here in the Snakes For Identification Section, and let us know it has been uploaded so it can be approved. If the photo is of good quality, we should be able to help you with the identification.
Best Regards JohnZ

I don't have an uploadable photo, but I can give a fairly detailed description of the snake in question.

John, give it a try. The more detailed your description, the better chance someone will know which snake you saw. Also, you need to give us a detailed locality and any behavior observations you made.
Perhaps someone here will be able to help.

OK, this snake was observed in the Brazilian rainforest on the edge of a clearing surrounded by savanah. It was aprox. 3.5 feet in length and dark green in colour. It was fast moving and slender. It looked alot like a young Jameson's Mamba. It also looked alot like a small Boomslang.

From that description, my first guess would be a Parrot Snake. When we got one in, it took me a few minutes to be sure it wasn't a boomslang.

I don't know that much about them. I only see a few references and none seem authoritative, but it looks like the South American snake known as the "Green Racer" is a subspecies of the Parrot Snake (Leptophis ahaetulla). And yes, they are mildly venomous, rear-fanged snakes.
If you got close enough to make it feel threatened you might have noticed a rather unusual defensive technique. They open their mouth and spread their jaws to the sides, making their heads look cartoonishly large...
