I had the kids watch Venom ER with me tonight. Now they want to know what kind of venom this snake has and what kind that one has. (Hemotoxins or Neurotoxins) I could go only so far before they became punks and wanted to know every snakes toxicity. I tried to find a list on the internet for them but failed.

My question is...
Is there a short list that lists common venomous snakes and what toxicity they have?

Scott, the list you are lookin for does not exist, as snake venoms are much more complex than just neurotoxins and hemotoxins. There are other factors such as cardiotoxins, etc that come into play, and many venoms that show combinations of symptoms, and that can even vary due to the local the snake was collected in.
Dr. Bryan Grieg Fry has lists of the LD 50 for many snakes on his site, which is a good starting point for your research.
Also, the site Clinical Toxinology Resources has species accounts of individual snakes. If you look under a particular animal, it will tell you if the venom is hemotoxic, neurotoxic, cardiotoxic, etc.

Hope this helps.

Generally speaking, and the easiest way to answer the young ones questions, it can be said that vipers and pit-vipers have a primarily hemotoxic venom, while the elapids have a primarily neurotoxic venom. Of course this is very general and I can think of many vipers and pit-vipers who have strong neurotoxic and/or cardiotoxic components. The same can be said for some elapids having hemotoxic components. Overall, snake venom is extremeley complicated and we are just beginning to understand it's complexities.
