You need to contact the Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries to obtain the application material. Apart from the necessary qualifications, you will need to have several letters of reference from people who have direct knowledge of your prior experiment. In addition, the state herpetologist will inspect your facilities before the permit is issued.

Wow, when did LA enact such controls? I think I remember reading that you used to need a hunting license, though I may be thinking of TX, OK, or MO, but letters of reference and passing an inspection? Don't get me wrong, I'm all for measures such as those. I wish this state would pass something like that. At least then the issue has already been dealt with and legislators realize that there are already safety precautions in place to try to keep them out of the hands of incapable keepers. I was just wondering if that was something that passed quietly or what.

Slightly off topic, but if you think "reasonable controls" will make them leave you alone, read up on what we've been going through in FL the last few years.
Not long ago people talked about Florida as a model of "resonable" and an exmple to follow to appease the policritters. Since then several have tried very hard to make the permits unobtainable. They didn't succeed (yet), but be careful waht you wish for...

Ashley, if you are planning on keeping venomous snakes that are native to GA, you do not need a permit.
If you are planning on keeping non-venomous GA native snakes, you will need a permit for educational purposes.
If you are planning on keeping Exotic Venomous Snakes in GA, you will need much more, including an insurance bond, and a free standing building to house the snakes, and a business involving the snakes, as they are not allowed to kept by individuals.
Contact the Non-Game Division of the Department of Natural Resources in Social Circle, GA, and they can forward you the application forms for the various permits.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards JohnZ
