Good morning,
After this die hard white sox fan got done enjoying the Diamondbacks humiliate the Cubbies I started thinking that I needed to quickly figure out what rattlesnakes we are going to exhibit at the NARBC in Tinley Park, IL next weekend. Some friends from the St. Louis Herp Society are bringing elapids for our exhibit so we'll have a great showing. My staff and I have narrowed the field but we can only bring 8 as we have that many traveling exhibits. So, I'd like to hear from the contingency on what your votes are for:
Rattlers we are definitely bringing:
1) Eastern Massasauga
2) Timber
3) Western Diamondback
4) Eastern Diamondback
5) Ridge nosed
6) Speckled ("Ivory" phase)
Now we need two more and here's our finalists (based on my staff and visitor feedback):
- Crotalus simus
- Crotalus d. culminatus (xanthic phase)
- Crotalus m. nigrescens
- C. vegrandis (high speckling)
- C. abyssus
- C. tigris
- C. l. klauberi
- C. atrox (albino)
We have some other very rare species but most of them are too young to show.
Any votes? Thanks a bunch!

Rob, I always like seeing nice Crotalus lepidus klauberi, so I will vote for that one.

i think being able to view Crotalus d. culminatus (xanthic phase) would help ease the pain from that horrible cubs series!

Could go with a US native theme and bring the Crotalus tigris and the Crotalus lepidus lepidus.
Or you could just go with the big and beautiful theme and bring the Crotalus vegrandis and the Crotalus simus.
Either way it looks as if you have some exceptional animals to display.

Hmmmm ...
Crotalus atrox and Crotalus abyssus are U.S. natives too but I guess it would make sense to have a U.S. native display.
I think I would go with the bigger Crotalus simus and Crotalus vegrandis. They are excellently colorful specimens and will definitely be great examples of rattlesnakes from other countries.
Just my opinion,
Karl

Just so my two aren't exactly the same as anyone else's, I'll go with the C. simus & the C. molossus. Tempted to go with the klauberi, but size may matter.

Thanks and keep 'em coming! Everyone's train of thoughts are identical to me and my staff's which is why we are struggling to pick our "top 8" rattlers. Of course, those who truly know rattlers can appreciate a little pricei or C. ravus, but the average person coming to a show wants to be "wowed" so I need to find that balance while also showing people that rattlers are not just big mean looking creatures. One of my thoughts is to have multi species displays as everyone is making some very valud points. I'll keep y'all posted.
