out of all the cottons i have had (and have), i recently caught one that lives up to the "badass" rep. unfortunately this guy wont settle down, or eat. which is unusual, normally i have good luck with them. and since i am not an expert and always learning, my quesion is: will this behavior deteriorate? most of the cottons i have had normally are really lazy and docile, is this a wrong assumption to make, or have i just been blessed with good tempered ones? throw me some opinions

Hey John, How long have you had it? Is it an adult? I've only had two that refused to eat, both were large W/C adults and I ended up releasing them back were I found them. Also remember that they normally stop eating this time of the year anyway. Does it look like its under weight? If not, I wouldn't worry too much yet.I have copperheads and cottonmouths that haven't eaten since the 1st week of September, and they won't until May or June. They do it every year. I just offer food and if they don't look interested, I take it back out after awhile. Don't leave them unattended for any lengths of time with live food though. You might try waiting a week and then offer the food in darkness, either by covering the cage or leave the room dark. Check on it in about a 1/2 hour and if it hasn't ate it by then, I'd take it out.
How are the day/night temperatures? That could effect it also. You said that you've had them before, so I'm assuming The cage conditions are OK. Its probably just the time of year. MartyM

yeah good point, it it pretty much winter in the south. its an adult, and its pretty heavy bodied. ill take your advice and try to feed him in a week or so in darkness.
daytime temps are about 80-85, and night time about 70-75. i have kept these temps pretty consistent with the other cottons and never really had a problem.

John, try this trick that Chad M. told me about. Get some chicken gizzards at walmart, and cut them to size, and warm them, and put them in with the Cottonmouth. For some reason, the problem feeder snakes seem to like them.
Hope this helps.

John, I have 4 long term WC cottonmouths, 3:1 and only the female could be said to be occasionally laid back. All three males still strike at movement in the room and I have gone as far as taping newspaper over the front of one cage that I have in lab that I occasionally have students in. I would say that calming down is generally not in their vocabulary.

As far as temperment, I have 2 cottonmouths that are laid back and fun to work with, 3 that will gape and vibrate their tails, but rarely strike, and 5 others that are evil nutcases.
Best Regards JohnZ
