I caught the last ten minutes of the above mentioned program on National Geographic a couple of days ago.(I live in the UK)There was a certain Dr who treats evenomations in his catchment area, and they where re creating a scene where some fool hardy chap picks up a snake on the road and gets bitten.(haha)Anyway the patient falls into a coma and the Dr treats the patient. He reportedly says that he administered 144 vials of antivenom!!.Has any body heard of or has more details about this bite that they are willing to share with me.I find it quite hard to beleive that somebody received 144 vials,I would of thought they would of died from mercury poisoning or scratched them selves to death from serum sickness. Thanks for your time
regards
John

Dr. Sean Bush, MD, an envenomation specialist from Loma Linda University Medical Center used around 80 vials on a Southern pacific rattlesnake envenomation. But that's the most I've heard of, and Wyeth doesn't work that well on C.v.helleri, so that explains the quantity. Each vial counteracts a specific quantity of venom, and the individual that you are talking about, I believe was bitten by an Eastern diamondback. Typically, 30 vials is considered at the top end of treatment. 144 seems like it would have been a bit of overkill.

It seems to me that there are a fair number of C.o.helleri bitesout here and yet neither Wyeth nor Crofab works all that well on them. I know that Wyeth was a bit more wide-ranging in the snakes used than Crofab, but it would be a god thing, I think, if helleri venom was added to the Crofab mix.
Cheers
