I think we may need to look at it differently. Protection of native species isn't necessarily a bad thing. I wish my state had protected timber's and massasauga's years ago. With the amount destroyed for hides in the past and the results from the Industrial Revolution, the numbers are very low, and near extirpation. Now they are protected to the fullest....hindsight 20/20. Maybe MD has more of a vision than others and want to keep people from taking, keeping, or killing them.

It is one thing to just ban wild collection of MD reptiles,or have limit quotas, but what they are attempting to do is ta ban posession, regardless of if it was captive bred or not.

How can an they prove if it was captive bred or not?
They can't. Anyone can catch a wild snake and say it is captive bred.

With big cats, breeders need to be USDA licensed and that leaves paperwork trail.
For example here in NV, we are allowed to onw native wildlife, such as cougar and bobcat, and I do own them, but I need to have NDOW permit and there are rules, my aniamls need to be permanently marked and I had to prove their origins to get the prmits to import them and posess them.
How do they get around the "prove it is captive bred' issues with other reptiles whose colelction was banned in some localities but posession is legal, like Box Turtles, anybody here knows?
I am sure it can be done.
When there is a will, there is a way..
