I know female King cobras become fiercly territorial and protective of their nests during mating season, is this behavior seen in other snake species, as it is with birds?

John, some Pythons are known to coil around their eggs to help protect and incubate them. This can raise the incubation temperature of the eggs by several degrees. They will often be more defensive when protecting eggs this way, but not to the extent that a King Cobra is known for.

Just an additional note to Johns post:
When coiled around the eggs they reason why they can raise the temperature is they have their muscles twitch slightly, generating heat.
Best,

Crotalus adamanteus will protect her young for a few days after birth. This is not necessarily true of all of them. Kauffeld mentioned observing this behavior in a captive situation in one of his books. I have seen it in the wild once.

I wasn't aware that they were that O. hannahs were "fiercely protective" of their nests. While I have one, I've never been around one that had a nest.
However, I have seen footage of Rom Whitaker (My King Cobra hero) inspecting one and checking internal nest conditions with measuring devices. The female simply took a safe distance and watched.
Now, having grown up in Florida...I can tell you different stories 'bout mama gators! LOL

Kerry, many years ago I remember seeing some excellent footage of a large female King Cobra protecting her nest.
It was on the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom, in the late 1960`s. It featured Marlin Perkins and Jim Fowler approaching a nest, and the female king strongly defending the nest, and Jim finally capturing her, and inspecting the nest / eggs, then releasing her.
The film made the fierce nest protection that we have heard of look very real, with many determined attacks and holding of ground by the cobra, however, with editing, you never know the full extent of what actually happened.
I looked for the video on on UTube, but it is not there. Perhaps someone has an ancient VCR tape of that program and will eventually post it.

Well, as I said, without witnessing one for myself it's hard to know what is the truth when it comes to reptile shows. Rom Whitaker doesn't seem much for showboating, which is one of the reasons I admire him (and probably why we don't see much of him on nature shows).
You remember Tom Allen? (another helper of Marlin Perkins) His father was Ross Allen of the big reptile farm in Florida way back when.

Kerry, you are right about Rom. He does not showboat at all, he just states the facts. I really like how laid back he is on the TV shows.
However, Rom approaching a captive female king could be somewhat different that approaching a nest guarding female in the wild.
I do remember Tom Allen from early TV shows, but not very well.
Hopefully, someone with first hand knowledge of King Cobras protecting nests will chip in here with their observations.

Actually the show I saw was National Geographic's "The King Cobra and I" with Mr Whitaker, and he went in search of a nest in the wild and, with the help of many locals, found one and examined it. He commented on how she simply moved off after a couple of gaping mouth threats and watched him, moving back immediately after he moved away again.
