does anyone know that "monitor meatball" recipe? i haven't kept monitors in years, and a friend just got one. i was trying to find the book that has it listed, but can't seem too. i recall its turkey hamburger, bone meal, and a crushed multi vitamin, but that was all i could remember. thanks

that is what i used to do except it was mix of extra lean ground beef and turkey, they need red meat too.
When I used to have a python and more monitors, i would do my own 'mix and freeze' stuff ages ago,(plus breed my own rodents) now that I have no snakes (other than wild ones living here)and I only have one young Nile monitor, I just go to pet store and get him young mice from there.
But with exotic cats, especially young ones,I prepare dishes for them, it is good to mix in some organ meat, not too much though, pure liver or kidney is not good either, that is where all the dirt gets filtered after all.

Chuck, the turkey meat ball recipe was widely used by places like the San Diego Zoo and many hobbyists. I wasn't sure what species of monitor you are keeping but that diet should only be supplemental to a whole animal diet. You can't beat a whole animal diet (mice, rats, quail, and insects). Every organ is important and the beneficial microbes found in even those organs we would think are low in nutrients may provide critical nutrition in some form; particularly varanids. With our larger monitors, we go whole animals all the way with occasional vitamin supplements (RepCal, Herptivite and MinerAll-Indoor) as our's are kept indoors.
Hope this helps, Rob
