As some of you know, I have been visiting this site for a little while now. I am amazed with the amount of imformation I have gotten here. Cro and some of the others here a brilliant. (Had to butt kiss a little)..
Not that I plan to stop participating in this site. However, I live in the Arizona desert. We host 17 different Rattlesnake species, Sonoran Coral snake and of course Gila and Beaded Lizard.. We also have a host of other animals and insect here that are fascinating. My question is,"are there any sites as good as this one for the southwestern region. Thanks......Shelby

Shelby, thanks for the support of this site and the site managers and experts ! There are many here who love to help folks learn about reptiles and amphibians, as we believe that educating people is the best way to assure the continued support of our hobby.
Although we are the Southeastern Hot Herp Society, we are also VenomousReptiles.Org, with members in all of the US and around the world. We have a large number of folks in the western states.
Many of the members here have kept, and are very familiar with the snakes of the west, and should have no problem answering questions about them. Doug Holte and Larry Lemon are good examples from the Abilene Zoo in Texas. In years past, I made many trips to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona hunting for reptiles, as have many others here.
As far as there being a Southwestern Herp Site, the individual Herp Societies of the western states and major cities are about as close as you will get. Some of the State Herp Societies have very nice websites, and very active groups.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards JohnZ

back around 2003 or 2004 a group of guys out your way started the Southwestern Hot Herp Society. The URL was www.SWHS.com or maybe .org, I can't recall. They were clearly running a knock off of what we are. I think there are enough hot keepers out there to support a society of your own. Why don't you organize some righteous people in the southwest and form a group? No one likes a knock off, so don't pattern yourselves completely after us, get together and do your own thing. I bet it will fly.

Thanks for the info Chuck.. As far as knock offs tho,.
"Imitation is the best form of flattery" I myself like the format here. I really dont have the expertise both at herping or computers do do a site myself. But, obviously I do apreciate any insight. Thanks Shelby

As usual, I never get in here much as I'd like to.
This organization is a fine grouping of herp people from a wide array of backgrounds. An "Island of misfit toys" if you will. LOL. The nice thing about this is that even though some of us now reside in the Southwest, our origins are from elsewhere. I for instance come from Indiana and therefore have something to offer when it comes to Midwestern herpetology as well, having done nearly a decade of field work on timbers.
Larry Lemon may want to chime in here soon, he comes to Texas via Florida and knows just about every back road and inlet through the Sunshine state. Now we team up and stomp around the cacti here in the Lone Star state but that doesn't mean we have forgotten our roots. So having an organization that encompasses everything, no matter what it's called, works out quite nicely! Hope this helps.
Take care.
Doug Hotle.

Doug, I love that line about us being an "Island of misfit toys" !
That movie is one of my very favorites. They sure don't make movies like that anymore.
