Z,
It all depends on where the electricity comes from. If its from coal, then probably yes. Our best bet for transportation right now is to encourage manual and mass transit where possible, use true hybrid technology, and raise CAFE standards. Cheap efficiency is our greatest hope, followed by new technology (it actually works best when they go hand in hand)

It's unclear to me whether electric cars are a good idea with current technology or not.
Yes, the electricity is coming from a power plant, which in my neck of the woods means nuclear and others means coal.
Since those are big expnsive plants I ASSume they have spent the money and research so that they produce power more efficently than a little hybrid car engine can, but when you figure in transmission losses, I'm not sure which is better.
My hope is that sometime soon, someone will develop a cheap, efficient, easy to produce solar cell. That might change everything, virtually overnight.

Humm........... "but here in SC we have NO waters without mercury warnings for the fish." Or so says a government agency.
They also say there is no BSE or CJD or Mad Cows in the U.S. Or so says a government agency, that is hugly supported by the beef industry.
It is funny that other countries have had hundreds of thousands of cows with Mad Cow Disease, and thousands of human deaths. But you know what, those countries test every cow for it. We only test a fraction of the millions of cows that are turned into hamburger each year. Is it any co-incidence that we now have CWD in deer, (mad deer disease)in about 42 states ? Those deer graze on cow pastures. Also, the same pastures spread the prions to goats and sheep (Scrapie), and the runnoff into the streams causes Mad Trout (Wirling) disease.
Did you know that a huge number of potential casses of vCJD or CJD are not recorded because the hospitals and corinors refuse to do autopsies on old folks and tend to lable the deaths as allshimers disease. Do you know why ? Because Prions are not killed by conventinal autoclaves in hospitals, and the surgical instruments will still carry the Prions to the next patient who is operated on with the "supposedly" clean and steril instruments.
Did you hear about the 250 folks who got letters from emory hospital and were informed that they needed to come in, as they had had their brain surgeries with instruments that had been used on an CJD patient ?
Or did you hear about the folks in PA who all ate dear chili at a fire department cookoff, and it later turned out the deer that was used tested positive for CWD ?
And did you know that Lyme Disease is an excaped engineered Bio-Weapon developed in a U.S. Weapons Lab ?
Again the government says not, however the freedom of information act was used to prove it, and I have verified the information with someone who "knows."
Now, before you all start bashing my "facts" here, do the research first.
Also, as this being a Demicrat verses Replican thing, not at all. Polititions on both sides to jump on any band wagon that gives them some support. All they have to do is say, "sure, we are gonna protect the Texas Eagle."
I have a good friend who worked for algore as an advisor. He is a lawyer and holds a PhD in Enviornmental Science. When algore was campaigning for prez, he compiled "statistics" that would show ocean warming, to help support gore`s lies. When gore was not elected, this friend started working for a Republican Senator who was not so keen on jumping on the global warming thing. Well, guess what, this friend took another look at his "statistics" and provided the Senator with science that was against global warning. Seems polital folks on both sides swing with the direction of the wind.
Also, on the energy thing, it about time we learned how to build nuculear power plants again, and learn how to dispose of the dangerous waste. Of the thousands of plants in the world, there have only been a couple of ones that have had problems that were very dangerous. Lets take the human error out of it, and have triple redundancy on all parts of a plant, and start using nucular again !
Sorry about this getting off topic a bit, but it goes back to trusting the government to do things in your best interest.
Best Regards JohnZ

Lyme disease? Was that one of Grant's projects, or did it start under Lincoln? I thought we had peace with England by then... :)

I have no problem with different view points, as long as you do what you preach, my problem is with hypocrites.
I might think somebody is ‘crazy' doing something, but I can respect them for doing what they preach and believe in, being passionate is OK.
Hypocrites piss me off, like Gore and other celebrities, they preach to us small common folks to give up our gas guzzling SUVs ( I kind of need mine to transport BIG cats and supplies, Japanese trucks just can’t handle my loads), but they themselves use limousines and private jets…HYPOCRITES
Or exotic animal SCAMstuaries, all mighty, they want to ban us, but exempt themselves, they want to have their animals and get millions in donations (this problem is worse in big mammals, no idea what herp rescue situation is, but FL folks know what I am talking about), so it is OK for them to have exotic pets but not for the rest?
Often these scamstuaries are just hoarder pet owners unable to support their BIG out of control pet collection, idiots no trainers no hands ego seekers, F%^%k ups, who realized there is more money to be made in claiming animal abuse than honest business, they obviously don’t do what they preach, as they live of purported exotic animal suffering, get MILLIONS in donations, but want to prevent the rest from doing the same, that is NOT doing what they preach, deserves NO respect.
So if tree huggers believe in walking and using bicycles/bus and tiny cars with Mexican air conditioning, that is fine, as long as they do it themselves, but when somebody wants me to feel guilty for not driving a tiny car while they drive limousine and private jets, SORRY, no respect from me, put your money/ACTION where your mouth is.
There is no public transportation where I live and I need big trucks, so sorry, I am keeping my big American gas guzzlers with serious torque to tow trailers.
I am not a soccer mom transporting kids in gas guzzler, I kinda need mine for real.

Cro,
I have tested for mercury myself, so unless the government is sneaking into my lab at night and 'fixing' my samples, I have a tendancy to believe that there is a Mercury problem in SC (and probably nation wide).
Z,
I really have no problem with heavy machiery, as long as it is being used for its intended purpose (to haul heavy loads). What chaps my hide is the Suburbans with a mom and her kid (too inconvenient to carpool) or the Hummer on its way to the golf course (why?).
I may be wrong, but I am of the opinion that we could all do just a little bit more to make a big difference. I am also of the opinion that the government, while not perfect, is NOT out to get us. And finally, for the record, I am a registered REPUBLICAN, though I don't always vote that way.
I like the fact that we can have differing opinions and still get along. Peace.

Josh, I read your post wrong. I thought you said there was NO mercury in SC, which would be suprising, as it is in most all fish in GA also. That is why adding more mercury to the mix will just make things worse.
Government may not be out to get us, but they are not necessicarly trying to protect us also. The Original setup, with States taking care of themselves, and a small National government to guard the borders was a good thing. But the Federal government has become this huge cancerous, rotten, bloated, wastfull, pile of dung. And I can not trust dung heaps, LOL !
On the car thing, the government should not tell folks what kind of cars to drive, but should create incentives that might help get some people who are using cars they really do not need to downsize. Like Z, I also need a larger truck or SUV because of the work I do. But a house wife taking the rug rats to school does not need a 10,000 LB Hummer.
Another thing that the government will rarely touch because of political correctness and fear of being accused of racism is the issue of older cars that are exempt from emissions testing. We pay $25.00 a year to emissions test our cars, which have catalytic converters, and produce little polution. However, the cars over 20 years old are Exempt from Emmissions Testing, and one of those cars can produce as much emmissions as 200 to 600 new cars ! Guess where all those old cars are ? They are alive and kicking in the black and hispanic communities in small towns all over the South East. And no politition in the South wants to stir up folks like like that by making them fix up their cars. (The good news is that if you want to find an old mussle car, like a 68 Camaro, or 70 Chevelle, or 65 Goat, or one of the Stangs, they can be still found in towns like Millageville, and Eatonton, GA by driving through the black communities and looking for cars up on blocks parked in back yards, LOL ).
So folks, do what you can to help conserve resources.
Support things like the Nature Concervancy.
But use due dilligance in believing what the government talking heads feed you. And do not become sheepeople and jump on the latest green fad, just because it is trendy. New Science is coming out all the time.
Best Regards JohnZ
