One of my staff is attending a workshop in California and is going to head out to Joshua Tree on Friday to try to take some pictures. He's relatively new to field herping and I've only been there once but many years ago. Does anyone have any recommendations on specific areas to go at this place where he may find some herps? I told him to look for plant material/fronds on the ground and large boulder outcrops where I did well years ago but its a big place. FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME DIRECTLY or post on here. A big thanks to those, especially John, who provided my other staff some great hotspots for S.E. herping - they got their alligator snapper pic on the last day!

Rob,I was stationed at 29 Palms In the early 80's. We used to do alot of rock climbing @ Joshua tree nat. monument. Wow!!!! there are alot of rattlesnake all around that area. There is a mountain made up of huge boulders. We used to see alot of snakes there. On top of that, the terain around the area is very sandy. We used to do manuvers at night and every night in the summer we would always hear the buzzing of Sidewinders at our feet. And I mean there were alot of them. The whole area all the way into San Bernadino county is great for herping. Also south of that, there is a stretch of I-10 that goes through a pretty big mountain range. There are parts that are made up of boulders there.
You got me excited thinking of that area again. It is a great are to find snakes. There are a lot of Chuckwalla out there. They might be protected though as are many in areas of Az. Shelby

Rob, it is great to hear that your herpers found the Alligator Snapping Turtle. They are always tough to find. Hope they found some snakes to take photos of also. This early in the year is always a bit of a chance, as the nights are still cold.
Best Regards JohnZ

There are a lot of Southwestern speckled rattlesnakes in the Indian Cove campground area. I went there last year and about 20 minutes of walking turned up one of them, and I am not a great snake finder at all.

Thanks Guys!! I'll let you know how he does.
John, the guys did real well. The alligator snapper was one of my guy's holy grail but they ended up photographing about 25 or 30 herp species (I'll post a pic - it was awesome - pretty small by snapper terms but it was the real deal)....no eastern diamondacks this time around but we're all going to try to get back down there ("business trip"). Thanks again for the great tips. Rob
