I wrote to the Denver Zoo directly asking them for the scientific name of the snake in the article, here is the answer I received from them:
The scientific name is Trimeresurus sumatranus

So, the Denver Zoo is probably still about 4 years out of date on its Scientific Name "Trimeresurus sumatranus."
Not surprising, as when new names are introduced and put into use, it takes a bit of time for the new name like "Parias sumatranus" comes into accepted use.
Folks have to review the science that was used to re-classify the animals, and they do not always agree with the scientist who have decided to split up, elevate, or dumb-down a Genus or Species.
Sometimes we see something like Elaphe become Pantherophis become Pituophis, over a short few years, as more new science is conducted and accepted or rejected.
A lot of this is based on the relativly new mDNA work that is being done, however, this work also will change as new ideas and techniques come available.
