I would not generally recommend Spanish Moss as a "good" substrate. It is better than none, but not as good as many other forms of substrate, including newspaper, in my opinion. My favorite (at the moment) is the saw mill fines I g et from a local saw mill... they are bigger than saw "dust" but smaller than "chips." I get a pick up truck load for 5$ from my local saw mill and they are VERY wet when I pick them up. This means they provide my snakes with lots of humidity.... which can be a bad thing if you keep desert animals.... If you tell us what kind of animals you want to keep, then we can recommend a substrate that is a good choice....

thanks for the info. for my pygmy i have been using spangum moss but where i live there is a bunch of spanish. the other day i collected a bunch and used some for an ancient ribbon snake of mine. after about 2 days he started actin strange and quit eating. i immediately cleaned his cage and used the usual substrate. he still died 2 days later (yesterday). i am now reluctant to use this for my pygmy. he may have just died of natural causes. the moss i collected i examined for parasites but found none.

unless you are going for above average humidity, then i would use paper or astroturf. i used some pet store stuff when i had pythons(sphagnum moss and a wood shaving product) and it worked great as far as that is concerned, but i had problems with mildew in certain parts of the cage...now i only keep a few timbers and the humidity really isn't a problem, so i use astroturf...much easier to clean too
