Just put in a frozen mice order online, and noticed the weight/size similarities of the older mice to the younger rats. Doesn't the mature mouse provide better nutrition than the immature rat? If you have a snake that will grow large enough to eat rats, is it a problem to switch from a large mouse to a small rat when the snake reaches the appropriate size (smells different)?

John,
You might get more food value out of a hopper size rat that is similar in size to a mouse.
You have to remember that fur makes up a lot of the weight of a mouse.
Also, you have to remember that the rat pup has been nursing on its mothers milk, which is a good source of nutrition.
Some snakes have difficulty digesting fur.
The difference in scent is not much of a problem, some snakes balk when going from the smell of mice to rats at first, but hunger usually overcomes this reaction.
Also, rat pups will have much less smell than larger, furred rats.
Hope this helps.
Best Regards John Z

I prefer neonatal rats to adult mice, as long as the snake will take it. Easier on the digestive tract, less hair, fragile bone structure, and mommas high protien and fat milk still in its belly. I for one think its a healthier approach,

I don’t remember where I heard this, but when it comes to feeding baby animals (snakes, lizards, whatever…), I was told it was better to use older animals as whole prey because of more calcium in bones, so I guess in this scenario older mouse would be better source of Calcium than young rat baby of same weight???
Honestly, I am not good when it comes to nutritional stuff, most of my life I survived on coffee, chocolate and ice cream without vitamin supplements and I don’t even have a regular primary doctor since I am almost never sick…I cure everything with allergy/cold pills or vodka. I just heard that calcium stuff somewhere LONG time ago…
Funny this post came at the time when my feed store didn't have the right mouse size for my cute Nile monitor so I had to get younger rats same size...
