Robert, the largest reliable record is of an Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, at 8 feet, 1 inch.

There are records based on old photographs that show what are probably larger Eastern Diamondabck Rattlesnakes, however, those can not be used oficially.

 Hope this helps.

My field guides and a couple other sourses I've read say the record for an eastern diamondback is 8 feet 4 inches.

I have a digital copy of a very old photo that has been circulated around claming to be a picture of an 11 foot EDB. However, one of the people in the photo is holding what appears to be a yard stick. Plugging that photo into my handy-dandy snake measureing program and assuming it is an accurate yard stick, I got a measurement for the snake of...wait for it...8 feet 4 inches (give or take maybe 2 inches).

mardi snipes gave me one 5 years ago that reached 1 inch under 7 feet. I know that wasn,t the question but I thought it was interesting. The snake had actually almost killed Mardis friend with a bite to the top of his hand. It now resides in a Virginia zoo....

Of course, 2 minutes after posting that I found the pic, and thinking that I had seen a better version of it, I did a search on the file name and found this thread, which includes Jogn Z and a I having a bit of a "discussion" over it. :)

Larry, that was a fun debate on the old photo.

Sure would be nice if we had the original photo to work with.

I resently ran into a posting on Georgia Outdoor News a fellow posted of a ten year old kid holding up what he swore was a 7 foot long diamondback rattlesnake.

Of course, one glance at the photo shows that the snake is probably a bit over 5 foot, and possibly 6 foot maximum.

Unless the 10 year old kid is 7 foot tall. Then the snake might be 7 feet long, LOL. I will try to photoshop a black bar over the kids face and post the photo here sometime. Don't want to get sued by the folks, even though they have already posted the photo on a forum.

 Best Regards John Z
