If you can find a copy, The Dangerous Snakes of Africa, by Spawls and Branch is excellent, albeit out of print. Try www.addall.com; www.herplit.com for instance. Any place that networks with used bookstores should be able to find some good stuff for you.
Cheers

I love field guides and besides the obvious Peterson's and Audubon's I like to use the - Snakes of North America both the Central and Eastern Regions and the Western Regions by Alan Tennant.
One of my favorite herp books is Manny Rubio's Portrait of a Predator
For learning all about scientific herpetology I use my college book - Herpetology: An Introductory Biology of Amphibians and Reptiles by Zug, Caldwell, and Vitt. Also Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians by Harold G. Cogger, etc... is good for a generalized study of reptiles and amphibians.
If I want to look at how beautiful herps can be then I go to - The World's Most Spectacular Reptiles and Amphibians by Bill Lamar.
For a general but thorough study on snakes I would also suggest The Encyclopedia of Snakes by Chris Mattison.
I also recommend many of the other books mentioned earlier.
