I am looking for help with identifying a snake that was found on a remote island off of the Sinai Peninsula . I have a picture and can supply it via email to anyone that may be able to help. Decription wise, it's primarily brown and the one in the photo is approx 8 feet in length. Please let me know if any of you are familiar with snakes from that region. Thanks!!

You will need to fill out a profile when you post here. That will usually get you a better reply.

Malis4178, the best thing you can do is fill in your Profile, and paste the photo of the snake that you want to identify into your Profile Photo. That way, we can have a look at it easily, and help you identify it.
You can also upload the photo to our Snakes For Identification section of the Photo Album, however, the photo will not appear to most of the folks on the site until it is approved by a site manager.
When you post the photo of the snake, try to narrow it down to the nearest town. That will make the identification a lot easier.

Great thank you! I have uploaded the photo so the snakes for identification album and will add it to my profile. I am trying to help my boyfriend figure this out as he is currently deployed in Sinai and has seen a few of these so just wants to be aware what him and his team are dealing with. Thanks again for the reply!

Not really sure but looks like it could be a Boiga sp. Rear fang...does not look like any vipers or elapids in that area.

Would it make any difference that this snake was found in the Gulf of Aqaba, on the Red Sea side of the peninsula? the guys have been looking into thee two suggestions and they're not convinced that the snake in the photo was either of these...

Malis, exact locations can make a very big difference in trying to identify a snake.
It is unfortunate that there is only one photo, and that it is not all that sharp.
Also, many snakes vary a great deal in coloration and pattern. Karl's suggestion that the snake might be a Malpolon monspessulanus is a good possibility. Take a look at the Montepellier snake in the photo at :
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://micologia.net/g2/albumsg2/Serpientes/Malpolon_monspessulanus_Chema.jpg&imgrefurl=http://micologia.net/g2/Serpientes/Malpolon_monspessulanus_Chema&h=576&w=720&sz=162&hl=en&start=14&um=1&tbnid=CrUd-Aj2bKxyFM:&tbnh=112&tbnw=140&prev=/images%3Fq%3DMalpolon%2Bmonspessulanus%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26rls%3Dcom.microsoft:en-us:IE-Address%26rlz%3D1I7GGLJ%26sa%3DN
Note the similar coloration and pointed nose.
Another possibility would be Psammophis schokari.
This is a whip snake, and it shares the pointed nose, and large size. Unfortunatly, if you search for photos of this animal, most will show the common striped variation, however, the snake can be found in a less common form which is non-striped, plain or lightly dotted, and can get a lot larger than the ones in most photos.
Do you have any additional photos of the snake that you can post ? Only a handfull of snakes from that region get over 5 feet in length.
Best Regards John Z
