I collected a very large adult female coachwhip from north FL off the i75 corridor. All the coachwhips I have seen in the past had a solid black head that faded to a tan color near the tail. This female lacked all black. She is tan from head to tail. I personally have never seen another one like her. I have checked with other herpers, I know, that are familiar with the snakes of that area, and no others have seen such a snake. I am just posing a question to the open market, hoping to ascertain how abnormal this animal really is. Has anyone ever came across coachwhips from that general area that lack all the black pigments? Also, she dropped 23 eggs that should be hatching soon. Since the neonate coaches do not show the same coloring as the adults, would it be possible to determine if the babies will also show the Hypo phase as adults? (PS, I have not received clearance from the hematological council to label them as "hypo" so we can also substitute "pastel" or "uni-color" in place of Hypo and I am fine with that.)

Hi Chuck,
I'm by no means a coachwhip expert but we do keep a few at our facility. Last year, while speaking at a herp meeting in Oklahoma City, I had a chance to do some herping and caught a big coachwhip with little to no black on its head - but, that's probably more normal for the western morphs. Do you have any pics you can share?

i don't know which sub-sp there is in OK. I don't work with anything west of the MS. haha. I think all the westerns are uni-color? Aren't that? Anyway, yeah, I have a couple pics. one of me holding her up showing her size...she is like 7.5 feet and another that shows her head better. sent them both to you just now. thanks

I've seen several specimens from Florida, and a couple from Aiken County, SC, that had very little black on them. I had a WC female Coachwhip, an adult, from Aiken County, that only had a couple of little bars of black on top of her head, and had whitish banding on her body, even though she was over six feet long. I bred her to my large normal Eastern male, but unfortunately, she died a couple of days after laying eggs. All 21 eggs hatched, but the babies looked like typical neonate Eastern Coachwhips and I did not hold any back, so I don't know if any turned out odd-colored or not. I uploaded a pic of this snake to the "Morphs" section under the Photo Album, but it has to be approved before it will be viewable, and I don't know what page it will appear on.

Here is a closeup of the head of a Coachwhip that The Boss and I ran down in Appalachicola one year. It also had very little dark pigment on its head.

The darker snake in the upper part of the pic, by the way, is my normal-colored male Coachwhip. That female's tail was nearly white, and she had a lot of pink underneath. It's too bad that so few people are working with this species due to their largely-undeserved reputation for viciousness(those of you who know me from reptile shows have probably seen me free-handling large Coachwhips, without being bitten), since they probably have a lot of potential for some interesting morphs to crop up.
