Berea men guilty of illegal snake charges
Ronica Shannon
Register News Writer
Three Berea men who pleaded not guilty in July changed their pleas to guilty Monday in Madison District Court after being charged with harboring illegally held wildlife, including several deadly species of snakes.
Brian Fryer, 30, was charged with 46 counts of selling, buying or possessing wildlife and was ordered Monday to pay a $4,840 fine that was probated to $2,840 by District Judge Earl-Ray Neal. He also was ordered to pay $320 in investigation costs.
The probated rate is under the condition that Fryer does not commit additional criminal offenses of any kind.
John Rowland, 46, and his son Joel Rowland, 18, each received a $1,000 fine that was probated to $700. Their probated rate is under the same condition at Fryer’s.
The Rowlands were charged with two counts of illegally buying, selling and possessing wildlife.
Each charge is a Class A misdemeanor and carries a maximum of one year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
An additional Berea man was arrested, but did not appear in court Monday. Jerrod Allen, 21, faces at least nine charges of illegally buying, selling and possessing wildlife.
Allen pleaded guilty at a previous arraignment, said Assistant County Attorney Garrett Fowles.
The Rowlands and Fryer will be subjected to jail time if their fines are not paid in a timely manner, Neal said.
The three men refused to give comments to media on Monday after their court appearance.
The investigation, nicknamed “Twice Shy,” was conducted by the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and was a two-year operation.
It was in early July when officers with the department arrested 10 people, cited an additional person and seized more than 125 venomous snakes and other reptiles. Among the wildlife seized were illegal western diamondback rattlesnakes, timber rattlesnakes, cottonmouth water moccasins, northern and southern copperheads, cobras, great basin rattlesnakes, a gaboon viper, a puff adder and an alligator.
“It is disturbing to me that individuals would keep such dangerous wildlife in their homes and in neighborhoods where they put their families, visitors and neighbors at such high risk,” said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Director of Law Enforcement Col. Bob Milligan.

What's disturbing to me is that this moron doesn't realize he'd be out of a job if it wasn't for the people breaking their bull$h!t laws. He should be happy about it. He saved the day and the community can now sleep peacefuly at night.
