Over the past couple of weeks we have been changing out our old Visions for new cages (mostly for a new look, something different for our visitors). We used the typical heat lamps that fit nicely into the shrouds of the Visions but were horrified when we started breaking things down. The heat lamps (Zoo Med) were only 5 months old but every one posed a serious fire hazard. The cord next to the socket became so hot that it became brittle that it would literally crack into pieces when touching it. On two of them, there was black smoke residue. Even though we were careful to make sure the cords were not sandwhiched in any way the amount of heat build up created a potentially devestating situation.
For those who stack their visions be very, very careful (especially if you use the heat lamps). I would recommend NOT doing that after what we've been through.
Just sharing some info that hopefully might prevent a disaster. I still like Visions but we now use heat panels and mounted fluorescents (or, make a heavy duty shelf to place them on to allow for better heat dispersal).

Question: if you use heat lamps in the cages, do pit vipers ever strike at it?

Craig,
In my experience pit vipers don't generally strike at heat sources. I suppose that their brain simply interprets that as heat in their environment. It usually takes a combination of cues to get a snake to strike (motion, heat, and smell)

I guess I didn't buy reptile equipment for a while. I am out of the loop of what is the latest herp fashion? ;-)
What the hell is ‘Visions’ lamp?
I am still using my old fluorescent aquarium light or plain good cheap metal light from Home Depot (my fav store) I had for yeaaaars.
I put these work lights outside of terrarium on top of metal screen, the type that go up to 150 watts bulb. I am getting back to monitors, aka snakes with legs, so I need to find out what the latest fashion/manufacturers are in herp industry. ;-)
My current monitor lizard count is only 4 , plus iguana an m many turtles and tortoises, many I had for almost 20 years, old crowd, I guess.
