I'm with Marty, keep it natural. I've had so much fun watching my herps in naturalistic vivaria. Contrary to popular opinion, it doesn't have to be more work if done right. Put a copperhead on a layer of peat/forest-leaf mulch/top soil with a little sand and then dump a few inches of oak leaves along with various pieces of dead bark and limbs and let the fun begin. Copperheads will feel completely at ease in these set ups and that goes for many of the venomous herps we keep. Even our bushmasters are nearly stress free being on exhibit w/out an actual hide "box" but rather strategically placed limbs, leaf piles, plants, etc that allows the snake to feel like it's hiding.
Now, for our off display animals, we use a top opening clay pot that one of my secretaries make - heavy duty, don't move around and easy to clean.

Exactly! Just remember to keep it simple. You don't want to construct something that you can't get your snake out of.About a year 1/2 or 2 years ago I was a "venomous escort" at one of the Columbia SC reptile shows, and some dimwit thought it would be cool to display his majave rattlesnake in a cage with an imitation human skull for a hide spot.(I hope your reading this!)Everything was fine until someone wanted to buy the majave, then we (I) had to get the majave out of the skull, and into a bag. I probably should have refused, but it became a chalenge, that snake didn't want to come out of that skull. But I and with some help from another vendor and another escort, preveiled and we got it out and sold.(I hope Cathy dosen't read this!Promise I won't do it again!)Keep it simple, but natural.Marty

Marty, I remember seeing that majave rattlesnake in a cage with an imitation human skull at the show.
This it the first I have heard though of your "fun" trying to get it of the hide, LOL.

Ya, I can't remember the vendors name that helped out, I'm terrible at names,he was the one who actually managed to finally get it out, but why would someone use a skull as a cage decoration at a show, when you know your gonna have to get it out to sell it? Maybe a corn snake would be ok, but venomous? Not to bright. Marty
