I'd say that depends on allot of things.Sometimes buying at a show, is "straight from the dealer".And it would depend on if your dealer is selling CB,WC,LTC, what species, how it was shipped, how its been taken care of, the snakes health, etc. Usually if you talk to the people at the shows you can tell if they really care about their animals, or if they just want to get rid of their "inventory". Arin, that is a really tough question to answer.
I am guessing when you say buying directly from a dealer, you are talking about having the dealer ship the sanke to you ?
If that is the case, then the reptile in question is probably placed in a snake bag, then into a shipping box, and sent out.
If it is a non-venomous snake that can be transported by say Fed X, it will probably ride on a big tractor trailer truck or even an air plane before it gets to the shipping center in your area. Then it will get to ride in a bouncy truck all day before it is delivered to you.
If it is sent air freight, it will still be bagged, and boxed, and then sent to your airport where you can pick it up. The Atlanta Airport now has a seperate climate controled room that they are supposed to keep animals in, but many animals in boxes wind up on the loading dock, which can be baking hot in summer, or freezing cold in winter.
All of that puts a lot of stress on animals.
However, animals that go to reptile shows get stressed a lot also. They are often stuffed into deli cups the day before the show, which is the last time they will see water for a few days. They are then transported by car, which can be very bumpy, and they can be overheated in transport, especially if they are put in the trunk of a car, or in a camper shell of a truck.
Then they are often put under lights at the shows, which is going to dehydrate them more. At the shows, they will see thousands of weird foreign human animals passing by, and that can stress them more. The poor old snake does not know what a human is, but it does know that it is larger than itself, and therefore must be dangerous.
A lot of the answer depends on just how good the dealer is, and how much he cares for the animals he is selling. And it depends on you getting out to the air freight place quickly, so that the snakes do not spend time on the tarmac or loading dock.
The best thing is to go the dealers shop directly, and purchase directly if at all possible.
Wish I could give you a better answer, but the question depends a huge amount on the dealer, the buyer, the season temperatures, and the reptile show.
Best Regards John Z
