Hey folks,
Has anyone ever shipped dead specimens (hots) to museums overseas? We are donating some prized specimens to a museum in Scotland and I'm running into some dead ends with USFWS in getting some straight answers. I've never shipped out of the country so this is new territory but I am waiting to hear back from our conservation police officer. Additionally, I have talked to a rep from Delta but I think he just graduated from Kindergarten so I didn't get too far - will call a supervisor today.
I'm sure there are permits but thankfully, none of the animals are CITES so it shouldn't be too complicated.
Thanks in advance,
Rob Carmichael, Curator
The Wildlife Discovery Center

Rob,
Write or call Kristen. She is up on all the laws as far as shipping venom and animals.

Hi Rob. You will need a Port Exception Permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services in order to ship dead specimens. Here is the link:
http://www.fws.gov/le/ImpExp/Regional_Permit_Offices.htm .
Also, here is a link which explains some of the regulations:
http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/waisidx_02/50cfr14_02.html . Articles 14.24 and 14.31 apply to this type of shipping. I hope this information helps you out. Take care.

Jim, fill out your profile! How do we know your experience level? Just kiddin' of course, but I would think you'd make for an interesting profile with a good pic from the KRZ archives.

Thanks a bunch gang!! Jim, I emailed Kristen and she's going to get some info to me. The rest of you gave me exactly what I needed and between all of you, should be good to go. Kind of neat thinking that our old gaboon viper will be appreciated by the folks in Scotland!

FSB,
Had Kristen put up a profile. Not a lot of pics of me around. I don't like having my picture taken.
Take care,
Jim

I know what you mean... I'm not too fond of having my picture taken either (or maybe I'm just not fond of seeing the end result!). However, no one said it had to be a picture of you! Have Kristen put a nice snake pic on there....
All the best-
Fred
