Snake man emerges unbitten after 113 days
October 05, 2008, 19:00
The man fondly dubbed "Mad Martin" has broken a Guinness world record. He is the first person to live with venomous snakes for 113-days.
Martin Smit left his enclosure this afternoon, after lodging with 40 venomous snakes, at a Hartbeespoort Dam Reptile Park.
Smit said the past three months had been long, but he applauded his companions for being on their best behaviour.
"It was so pretty cool ... I mean if I ever wanted to get bitten by a snake it would have been there - to get through it unbeaten is fantastic, says Smit. It's all for a good cause, but Smit says he won’t be trying it again anytime soon.
Jean-Perrie Skurman, a cerebral palsy patient was among the onlookers and about R50 000 has been raised for children like him.

I think we all sit in stunned silence. This is an amazing accomplishment.

Martin is a great person. He has helped me in so many ways with my african species I keep. Also has helped me learn new ways to handle my boomslangs.
I am planning a trip to South Africa in the future just to visit him and do some Africa herping and even see some other African wildlife. Who knows maybe a lion. lol
A great guy all around.
CONGRATS MARTIN!!

I second what Gary said... ;)
Very big accomplishment, not that is not believable, but that is a LONG time. It is GREAT that some of this information is making it to the US. In this country especially, educating an otherwise ignorant public is essential.
I would love to hear more about the experience! Where are ya Martin? LOL..
Take Care.
