I was viewing one of Al's videos this evening (beautiful new king sir!) and a question came to mind...I'm wondering if there are any special precautions about the type of water that those of you who keep give your charges?
Since they would not (generally?) drink chlorinated tap water in the wild,I wonder about the potential deleterious effects (like we see in fish) and whether the common practice is to use distilled water or other water that avoids the chemical treatments seen in "city" water?

Charlie,
My snakes only get the higest quality H20. The snakes in my office get only DI water (mostly because I have a DI tower in my chem lab). My snakes at home get water from a 100' well filtered through a ceramic filter (mostly because that's what I drink).
Of course I had city water (with a minimal residual chlorine) for about 10 years of snake keeping, with no obvious ill effects. I think that we all just use what we have available.

Every single organism in my house get reverse osmosis purified tap water. I run the tap water through a couple micron filters into a carbon filter then through a reverse osmosis membrane. =)

I have a water delivery service from LeBleu. My snakes have been drinking that stuff for years, with no negative effects. Oh and I guess I should add, I do hand water some of my snakes like Al does. I don't recommend doing it though because of the risks involved.

The water from the well where I am living is full of copper and other metals, and I do not drink it.
And I would never give it to any of my reptiles or even to the rodents that I raise for snake food.
So, I am buying good quality commercial distilled water and spring water for my use, and for my reptiles. I think that the minerals in the spring water are good for the snakes, so I alternate back and forth between the distilled water and the spring water every week.
Best Regards John Z

trey would kill me if i paid for bottled water to give to my snakes haha.
instead i usualy take an run the water, an let it sit 24 hours in the sunt o get rid of teh cholrine etc. i always had a rule that if i can smell the chemicles in it it aint good to use.
when i was younger an kept fish my parents always bouight all those nifty chemicles to take he chlorine out, to soften the water etc... now adays i don't bother when any of my junk an keep fish just fine without any of it.. course this county has enough breaks in the waterlines that its all filtered by root anyway lol might as well be well water even when its city water!

Josh...
I would advise against DI water for your snakes. It has ALL of the minerals/ions removed and makes a very chemically active water that will actually pull minerals out of the snakes bones.
I use well water to water my snakes.
