Glue Traps... again

I recently was called to a VETERINARY CLINIC (get this) because they had trapped two snakes inside the clinic using those barbaric devices, glue traps. When I got there, the clinic manager pulled a tied-up plastic bag out his desk drawer that held two traps. In one was a dead smooth earth snake and in the other was a sub-adult black rat snake that was still very much alive after being stuck in the trap, in a plastic bag, in the desk drawer for over 24 hours.
I requested some mineral oil.
"Why," I was aked, "will that help keep snakes away?"
"No," I replied, "It's to help free this guy."
"NOT IN HERE!" was the response. After assuring them that I would bag the snake and take it away, I was given some mineral oil and began squirting it onto the poor snake, whose lower jaw was stuck in the glue, though he was still actively trying to defend himself, pathetically enough.
"Wow, he's really mean, isn't he?" asked the clueless manager.
"I think I'd be acting much the same way in his situation," was my reply. As I gently worked to free the snake, I could only think of the irony that here I was, treating an afflicted animal in a veterinary hospital that had no regard whatsoever for its obvious suffering, and had actually inflicted this suffering in the first place. Is this not a violation of the Hippocratic oath? Obviously, only dogs and cats qualify as "animals" to these people. They also wanted me to keep it quiet so I didn't alarm their staff.
The place was full of obvious signs of rodent activity... droppings everywhere, and even some chewed-up papers in one of the desk drawers. I pointed out this damage and the fact that the snake was there to provide some badly-needed extermination work for free, and got no response, except "I don't like either one" (snakes or rodents). Adding major insult to injury, the poor snake had an obvious bulge in it, having recently ingested a mouse. Is this any way to treat a friend? I could only think, "What would Doug Mader say?" The snake seemed ok in spite of its ordeal and has been released in a nice place, far from idiots, and glue traps.

It would be very, very tempting to make public the name and location of this clinic, and to make it known that they do NOT care about animals, other than dogs or cats, and probably only "care" about those because of the money they make. Thankfully the vet I use isn't like this, but really cares about ALL animals, and has no hesitation to treat even hot snakes. He's even helped me with tarantulas that had a piece of moulted exuvium stuck to them.

I removed a black rat a couple months ago in the same predicament. I used cooking oil which worked well. The snake was found by an exterminator in a glue trap placed OUTSIDE on a covered patio. He was simply going to throw the snake and all into a garbage container. My wife heard about it as it was at her office and gave me a call. I went up there and had the snake freed in less than an hour. The poor little fella had 80+% of his body and top of his head stuck in the trap. He lost quite a few scales and was dehydrated. Once freed he could not decide whether to drink from my water bottle top or bite me, LOL. He did both. I took him home and cared for him for a few weeks feeding him twice and letting him have a good shed. I released him in a park Clemson University Extension maintains in Columbia. It is a great little park where they do research that is open to the public. It has quite a few alligators in the 3 main ponds. It is a fun place for mountain biking and hikes.

Im sorry Fred but many clinics do function in that way,as far as, if its domesticated or in captivity (snakes to a lesser extent, most day practice vets are scared to touch um, call around) its worth care, if from the wild call a rehabber so it can be returned. Not all clinics are that way, I have worked in Vet Er and day practice, it depends on alot of factors. Im sorry you had such a negative experience with the clinic Fred, would you email me privately and we can discuss which and which Dr? I would really like to know since I have worked with various Vets in the area. Thanks again, sorry for the US medical reality check
(not all, again not all)

Sharon,
If you don't mind I'd like to know who that vet is. I can't find one here in Sumter who's comfortable working with hots. If you're not comfortable posting here, could you please e-mail me at joshuacastleberry@hotmail.com. Thanks.

urgh i hate those danged traps -_- i hate them even for mice or rats. Suposedly they are more humaine but whats humane about a trap that leaves the animal alive on it to the mercy of whatever comes along? the stress ontop of the fact that most poeple dun either care, or they forget about the trap just isn't worth it for me.

A human-size glue trap might be nice.
I would love to have had one set when someone drove into the vacant property I am trying to sell, and dumped a truck load of junk last week.
It would be very tempting to leave someone caught like that in the trap for 3 or 4 days before you released them. And, I think that mineral oil would be just too nice to dissolve the glue. Something that burns a bit comes to mind, perhaps gasoline...........
You could also leave one on the front porch to deal with Jehovah's Witnesses and other folks trying to sell dangerous things like Girl Scout Cookies.......
And we could put glue traps along the Rio Grande and other borders to help slow down invading varmits.......
Just some Politically Incorrect random thoughts.......
Best Regards John Z
