A NEW HERPETOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION HAS BEEN FORMED BASED OUT OF PENNSYLVANIA AND SURROUNDING STATES.
I have been working “in secret” in a sense, on a project of mine to bring together like-minded individuals, sharing an interest in reptile and amphibian conservation, scientific observation, and captive care. I have been quite hesitant for some time now, to disclose any information about this project yet, simply because, despite the kind words and work that the people who have helped out have put into it, is far from complete in my eyes.
I have named this new organization The Pennsylvania Woodland Herpetological Society. My goals and existing workings are geared to create a “true” herp society for the state of Pennsylvania and surrounding states. Although, I wish to provide a tight-nit community for those in this area, all are welcomed to join and become an active part of this growing society. In fact, I encourage this. Many aspects of this community have been in the planning stages for months, before any work to establish such a “formal” organization began, as I feel an inactive “website herp society” is useless for my particular goals.
I hope I am not “stepping on anyone’s toes “ here, as I would hate to do so. My goal is not to compete with other sites, but to create a “WalMart” of Herpetological resources, where you can find everything you need in one place. ;) I hope to create a lasting community geared toward education and conservation, referencing all of the useful resources (online, in print, and physical resources ) I am sure we can provide in the future. It is my every intent, to create a merging of keepers, conservationists, and general herpeculturists in the Pennsylvania and surrounding area, sharing ideas and knowledge, for the benefit of all.
With the approaching legalities encroaching on the herpetological hobby as a whole, I feel this is becoming ever more a personal need for me. By gathering knowledgeable and experienced, RESPONSIBLE herp enthusiasts, I hope we can eventually set the standard for what “good herpecultural “ practices are, and benefit the community as a whole.
The Pennsylvania Woodland Herpetological Society website is currently running at: www.PWHS.webs.com. The site may move soon to a more stable hosting arrangement, but this general address will serve as a permanent link to wherever the society settles on the web. The P.W.H.S. as a “physical herp society” is currently offering:
* A yearly News Letter.
* Educational Resource References and Consulting.
* A herp Adoption Program, taking in and adopting out unwanted animals. (Based out of Washington County Pennsylvania).
* Herp Rescues and removal services. (Expanding in the near Future).
* Plans on Member meetings at the Hamburg PA Reptile Show and other shows in PA and surrounding states, with member tables to provide educational displays and workshops.
* And a “P.W.H.S. Counsel” to discuss, review, and influence through education, the herpetological happenings in the Pennsylvania area and surrounding areas.
The Pennsylvania Woodland Herpetological Website is still under construction, and may move in the near future. Although, as of now is still being worked on, and is currently providing:
* General Site, National, and Local herpetological News updates.
* An updated calendar listing all P.W.H.S. nationally and locally relevant events.
* An “Ask an Expert” section for general herpetological related questions. ( Answered by our P.W.H.S. Counsel Board).
* A very broad and comprehensive Herpetological forum and chat room, as well as scheduled online meetings in the P.W.H.S. Virtual Conference Room.
* A reference section to Educational videos and other web resources available on the web. (Educational Resource section is still under construction).
* A P.W.H.S. Directors Blog, sharing the personal thoughts on P.W.H.S. relevant events and happenings.
* Online registartion to the P.W.H.S. Herp Adoption Program.
* Links to other organizations operating in the area.
* A File Library. (Download section still under construction).
* And listings of the widely and commonly recognized Reptiles & Amphibians of PA and surrounding states. (Pages still under construction).
It has been expressed to me by many how imperative it is to establish, at least , a small network of members while the site is still under construction , to provide feedback and needed resources. Administrative positions are available, and will be filled by those individuals corresponding to the individual tasks involved.
Please bare with me, as MUCH of this is still a work in progress, but it is my sincere hope that together, we can provide some of the necessary changes and information that is essential to establish a tight, communicative society as a whole.
On a side note, I would like to thank John Zegel for his contributions in getting the P.W.H.S. on its feet.
Stop by the site, and check it out today…. www.PWHS.webs.com
Thanks You, & Take Care.
Sincerely,
John Mendrola (Pennsylvania Woodland Herpetological).

John, it is great to see that The Pennsylvania Woodland Herpetological Society is ready to meet the herp world !
You have put a tremendous amount of work into getting the site ready.
I hope everyone here will visit the site, and consider becoming members.
Although the Society will be centered around the States that attend the Hamburg Reptile Shows, it will reach the whole Nation through the internet, so everyone is welcome.
The site is a friendly place where folks with all types of herp interests can gather to discuss turtles, lizards, frogs, crocodiles, salamanders, harmless snakes, venomous snakes, reptile husbandry, and many other topics.
Hope to see some of you there.
Best Regards John Z
