“I don’t know if we will allow snakes back into any of our classrooms.”
This is really sad, and a tremendous setback for something I believe in passionately. I am extremely opposed to sterile, uninspiring learning environments, and think they are deleterious to true education and learning how to actually think. Who wouldn't learn better in a room filled with interesting things, from aquaria to skulls to Indian artifacts, and living things should always be a part of the biology classroom, at least. Curiosity inspires one to learn, and so to inspire learners, we need to engage their curiosity.
I can only wish that I had had a Charles or a Joshua as a high school biology teacher.... I don't think I ever had a teacher that could tell the difference between a cottonmouth and a rat snake, but at least I could, so this would never have happened in any of my classes!
I just have an ongoing sadness about how ignorant the vast majority of people - even people involved in the natural sciences - can be about some of the earth's most fascinating creatures.
To Z, re. The Trouser Snake: I had one of those once, in the middle of a snake talk I was giving. Mildly em-barassing but good for a laugh. Mine was much bigger...
