Virginia Beach woman strangled by pet python, police believe
VIRGINIA BEACH
Police investigators believe a 25-year-old woman was strangled Tuesday by a 13-foot tiger python she kept as a pet.
According to police, the woman's husband came home about 11:30 p.m. to find his wife lying in a bedroom in their home in the 5200 block of Maracas Arch. The snake's cage was open.
The woman, identified as Amanda Ruth Black, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Preliminary information from the medical examiner's office indicates the woman died of asphyxiation.
According to police, she was trying to give the snake medication when the incident happened.
It took two animal control officers to catch and restrain the snake, which was found in the bedroom, police said. It is now at the Virginia Beach Bureau of Animal Control.
The case remains under investigation.

VIRGINIA BEACH - A pet snake may have strangled its owner to death in Virginia Beach earlier this week, police say.
Amanda Ruth Black, 25, was found dead in her home on Maracas Arch around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Her husband called police and said he found her lying in front of the pet snake's large cage, which was empty.
Police spokesman Adam Bernstein said the medical examiner's preliminary report found that the woman died from "asphyxiation caused by neck compression." Investigators are still awaiting the final results of the autopsy.
Animal control officers reported to the house and found the snake in the same room as Black's body. Bernstein said the snake was "extremely agitated" and required two officers to control it. The snake is currently being kept at the Bureau of Animal Control.

I have said it time and time again:
DO NOT WORK WITH LARGE CONSTRICTORS OVER 9 FEET LONG, BY YOURSELF !
That simple rule would prevent almost all deaths to humans from constricting snakes.
Snakes are primitive animals. They are not puppy dogs. They work on simple emotions like food and water, defense, procreation, and the desire for comfortable temperatures. They do not have the ability to reason that the human trying to treat them with a medication like the woman was doing, is trying to help them. It will easily be viewed by them as a threat.
Wake up people !
Another nail in the coffin of the reptile keeping hobby, that could have been easily prevented with a little foresight by the keepers !
Best Regards John Z

This is precisely why USARK is lobbying the state of VA to enact our model legislation. The same legislation which is pending in the state of NC right now. Our model will not keep accidents, rare as they are, from happening... but it mandates caging standards, safety protocals, escape prevention plans, registration and micro-chipping in order to minimize the occupational risk posed by working with certain reptiles. It is important to note that the risks with certain reptiles are occupational... not public safety threats. No member of the innocent public in the US has ever been been seriously hurt or killed by a captive reptile... ever! This is a tragic accident that could have been prevented with some simple safety protocals. Approximately 1 person a year dies from a captive reptile as an occupational hazard in the US. Approximately 90 people a year die from a pet horse as an occupational hazard in the US. 0 members of the general public is killed each year by either one of thes animals in the US.
IF ANYONE LIVES IN THE VA BEACH AREA PLEASE CONTACT ANDREW @ 252-207-1041.

<<Approximately 1 person a year dies from a captive reptile as an occupational hazard in the US. >>
This needs correction:)
Big cats kill one person year in the US on average, reptiles are 1.5 (the breakdown would be 0.7+/- by venomosu snakes, about 0.7+/- by constrictors and the tiny rest by supposed salmonella from turtles/iguanas or this one case when guy was found home dead and he had huge monitor lizards, but not sure if it was ever determined if they kileld hom or just were hungry AFTER he died and there was no other food at home...)

Thsi year is bad for snakes so far, in january 08 the venomous keeper in NM died and now this. They say this pythin case is still under investigation. There was this one case in FL in 2005, wife found husband dead, he owned cobras, at first cobras were suspected, but autopsy showed it was some drugs that killed him, so let's wait for final report on this one.

here is the FL info:

Autopsy reveals that snake owner died of drug mixture
There was speculation one of Robert Daniel Griffin's 40 snakes were responsible for his death There was no evidence of a snake bite on Robert Daniel Griffin's body when Griffin was found, sheriff's deputies said. But there was evidence of a nearly full bottle of methadone, which is commonly used to treat narcotic withdrawal and dependence, at the Griffins' home.A man who kept more than 40 pet snakes, including three cobras, died from a...

Z- I am aware of the statistics... thats why I said approximately... you have a flair for the overdramatic... this is an isolated, but tragic accident, my heart goes go to the family.
Jared- I know this is a difficult time. You must have been posting just as I was. You and Amandas family have my sympathies and prayers. I am so sorry for your loss.

Protocols are only good if they are being followed. In quite a few big cat related severe injuries or fatalities, the person was never IN the cage and the cat was never OUT of the cage.Big cat (or any animal rally, even bunny) protocol says do not put your limbs into animal cage, as they see it as their territory (your limb is toy or food). So in few cases the person broke the rules by putting their limb inside a big cat cage to ¡¥pet the kitty¡¦, only to have the cat bite it bad, or bite it off. In few cases the person died from blood loss. So no matter what caging or protocols you have, if the people don¡¦t follow them ƒ¼ SIGH
I have signs warning people not to put hands in cages, in English, ¡K

The difference between "1.5 people documented" being killed by captive reptiles and "approximately 1 person" being killed by captive reptiles?
Really?
That is the focus of this?
Really?
How very very sad.
I am sorry for the woman's family.
People continue to think "It won't happen to me."
No matter what their hobby or interest is.
Be careful people.

Yes, there is a difference between 1 and 1.5 people per year, since for statistical purposes, over 3 year period it is ONE extra human life, so YEAH, i see BIG difference for my statistical purposes . Also, i want to be as accurate as possible, so AR can not catch me in any lie, gee, i don’t even want to get a parking ticket so they can not say i am a law breaker.
Also, i see the trend, that if nobody knows the victim, it is all about stupid owner, Darwin awards, etc, but the moment somebody on the forum or elist says they know the victim, all the people change the tune and talk about tragedy and no longer about stupid pet owner.Well, to me every time a person gets killed it is a tragedy, it is given, no need to say it so everybody see ‘we care’.
End of rant;-)
