The main problem is as I see it.Over the past few years the reptile Industry has reached those Individuals trying to only make money who do not care about me or any other hobbiest or any single law or4 the health of any reptile. They do not care who they sell to or If any one is even able to care or handle said animal.Through these inscrupulus individuals we have recieved so much negative press that the public is easaly convinced that we as a whole are exactly alike. This is a mentality only we can change through education and ledgeslation .For this we must band togather .For the hammer is comeing and we are the nails. Thanks Archie

Get to know your local media and authorities in person, not just thru the emails. Show them what responsible ownership/husbandry is in good/peace time, too late to do it when accident just happened and everybody is hysterical.
Get to know your local animal control personally and let them know if situation arises, you are there for them to be part of the solution by helping them care for exotic animals, etc…
I did the same in my town, I had animal control, local editor, some commissioners come here at different times to see what good big cat husbandry is and it made them feel no longer scared of exotic owners, as they were no longer scared of the UNKNOWN most fear.
As fate would have it, within weeks, somebody made a nighttime prank phone calls to 911 about supposed tiger running at large with wiener dog in its mouth just before animal zoning ordinance hearing. Media made fun of it, animal control called me just to check my tigers were accounted for and get the confirmation if indeed this is a true report (which is wasn’t), I will help them with the tiger husbandry. Had I not educated these folks before hand, it might have been media circus, in this case, it turned into a media joke:

Make yourself part of the solution for your local authorities and media.

I would be really careful about that one. Keep in mind he's 16. If the media gets ahold of that, especially after what has just happened, they're going to have a field day. Regardless of how responsible he may be, he is still a minor, and noone is going to look at it any other way than a 16 year keeping deadly animals.
If he goes out their promoting himself, it's going to do more harm than good.

Archie, I believe that'd be me. ;)
Yes, I will be 17 Nov. 1, and as stated, that is not a really logical thing for me to do.
I am all for becomming involved. If people were willing to help take in animals and HELP the community instead of destroying it with this crap, there wouldnt be a need for such tight restrictions.
I would LOVE it if things remain the same in PA for at least a year, because I have established a society PA that has the pontential do alot of good. (especially with regulating the Hamburg shows). However, I do not see things staying the same for very long.
And, at 17, my voice not only doesnt count much, but could potentially stir things up even more. I do however, wish I was of age to really dive into some of this, and chat with some of the orginizations proposing these bans in this state, and nation-wide.
Take Care.

You can still send intelligent, non emotional letters without stating your age.

Tom,
Believe me, I have been. I just cant help but feel that there is no hope, when I may be one of only a VERY few in my area that has gotten off of their a** to do somthing about any of the proposals that come up.
You are right though, once my animals are no longer allowed, wether in my state or nation-wide, my ONLY pride has to be in knowing that I did somthing...
Still, I cannot imagine this happening. I will be severly crushed. This is why I have been seriously considering specific schools, hoping to get into the scientific aspects of this field eventually. By that time, that may be the only way I am "legally" allowed to come into contact with these animals.
Take Care.

Serpent's Den.... ah yes, I have been seeing their ads on the boards for quite some time, and my "Scumbag Sense" was definitely tingling...
Be very informed and careful about where you acquire your snakes, for any number of reasons. I prefer to obtain snakes only from individuals that I know, or whom are known by others I know, and who are not in this for profit. You can always find what you're looking for eventually, with patience. We all need to stop supporting the blood trade.
I have purchased several snakes that originally came from Ripa Ecologica (www.bushmastersonline.com) and they have all been in superb condition, as one might expect. There are many other good sources as well. Perhaps we could compile a listing of "approved" dealers or sources for reptiles and shut out some of the riff-raff.
