I think that leaves are fairly safe, if they are freshly fallen, and dry.
I have collected attractive wood limbs for exhibits from the forest floor during the winter, and have had dorment ants that were living deep inside of the wood come storming out once the wood was inside the warm cage setup. Then I had to deal with hundreds of the little boogers swarming all over.
The larger the display material, the more chance that it will have unseen insects living somewhere inside of it.
