Come to think of it, there was a survey on here a while back asking what was the most dangerous North American snake, and I'm pretty sure C. atrox came out on top.

Well, Fred, since you hit me up like that ;-)
I am a big fan of every Agkistrodon I have ever had or taken care of (quite a few).
But I am totally opposed to getting any snake as a "learner" snake. I don't like the idea of throw-aways in any area of the animal care trade.
To me - a starter Cottonmouth makes as much sense as buying a Poodle because you want to learn how to take care of a Rottweiler. So you learn basic dog (or snake) care and then ditch the Poodle (or snake). It doesn't deserve that!
You can watch the cycles in our own classifieds.
Every so many months there is a plethora of venomoids that show up in "excellent condition, eating well, surgery done by licensed vet ..." yada yada yada - all meaning that the current seller has learned all he thinks he can from this poor shuffleboard snake and is ready to pass it on to the next dumb schmuck (nothing personal to those who have taken in these animals to remove them from this pass around) that will take it.
What a waste!
TAKE THE TIME.
LEARN ABOUT THE SNAKE YOU WANT.
FIND A WAY TO WORK WITH THEM (someone else's - mentor/zoo/other)
GET THE SNAKE YOU WANT
NOT ONE YOU DON'T REALLY CARE ABOUT!
Sorry if this comes off as heavy-handed or ranting.
It is not meant that way.
It is meant to keep us all on the right path to responsible husbandry.
Stepping down from my pulpit...heading over to shake hands with "Brother Love"...
(wondering if anyone else remembers Neil Diamond)
