Friends, I am choosing an eastern massasauga as my first hot. What do you think of that choice?
Thank you.

Probably not a bad or difficult animal to keep.
However, they are protected throughout their entire natural range in the US and Canada. In Michigan, the massasauga is listed as a species of Special Concern. In all other states, and in Ontario, the snake is listed as Endangered.
Make sure that you get any and all appropriate paperwork to document how you got yours legally.
Otherwise, things could get quite messy.
I am not sure where you can get a legal Eastern Massasauga but I am sure it could be possible.
Even Eastern Indigos can be kept if you persevere and get the appropriate permits in certain states.
I imagine that their (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus) care would be very similar to other Sistrurus from similar habitats. In fact, they are probably closer in needs to Dusky Pigmies than they are to Western or Desert Massasaugas.
Good luck.

Jay, as Karl said, eastern massasaugas are protected throughout their range. I would expect a great deal of hassle to get all the permits needed to keep this subspecies. I would consider W. massasaugas. Behaviourly they are essentially the same, they are readilly available (there were lots at the last columbia show), and very reasonably priced (maybe 10% of the cost of an eastern if you could find one for sale). Good luck with whatever you choose.

Keeping protected species even if you have the correct paperwork is just asking for trouble. Better off picking something that's not protected, like a Western Massy, Pigmy RS, or a Copperhead.
