Hello. Can any of you confirm that a single incident of this occurred - a Gaboon Viper dumped in the Everglades, etc. Or am I chasing an urban legend ?
I thank you !

Joe would certainly know, being a Floridian. I think it is feasible, given the numbers of exotic animal dealers, importers, enthusiasts, breeders, etc. in southern Florida, and the frequency of hurricanes that could possibly destroy outdoor enclosures (unreported by their owners) that almost any species of snake, whether intentionally released or not, could conceivably get loose in the Everglades, but the climate would be far too hot and wrong for gaboon vipers to flourish there. They are denizens of the deep African forest, which receives only dappled sunlight and has relatively cool temperatures.

I have never heard of anyone finding anything. joe is in the field a lot. So are a few other friends of mine.
I wonder if the gabby would even live in Florida. They are not as hardy as some think. They like lower temps......

This sounds like the intentional beginning of an urban legend (rumor). What is the source for this?

I've never even heard that one as a rumor, and I've heard some pretty wild ones.
I have to agree that it doesn't seem likely one would survive here either.

Next we'll hear that gaboon vipers are "interbreeding" with burmese pythons in the Everglades, creating deadly giant "pythoons."
