‘I haven’t met a truly aggressive snake yet. Normal domestic cats are far worse’
A tattooed South African snake handler, who moved to the US to become a vet, has rocketed to fame as a sexy wildlife action hero.
Durban-born Donald Schultz has featured in several programmes on Discovery Channel, and recently starred in a pilot for an international animal show likely to be screened later this year.
His rugged good looks have drawn comparisons to Crocodile Dundee and late wildlife hero Steve Irwin. Irwin died in 2006 after his chest was pierced by a stingray barb.
Like Irwin, Schultz has raised eyebrows for his love of poisonous snakes, insects, crocodiles and sharks.
Dubbed “Snake Boy” since his school days, when he worked at a Durban snake park, Schultz now lives in Hollywood. He recently got engaged to an Australian killer jellyfish researcher he met on a film set.
Despite his love of animals, Schultz says animals don’t seem to like him. The 30-year-old told the Sunday Times he had been scratched, bitten and chased by everything from an alligator to a tabby cat: “I definitely don’t have animal magnetism — I’ve been bitten by snakes that aren’t supposed to bite, clawed by cats and bitten by dogs.”
Schultz’s love of snakes and creepy-crawlies dates back to his first snake — a common house snake — that he lost at home, prompting his family to move out. He visited the local snake park so often that he landed a job there.
He moved to the US and took up veterinary science studies, abandoning these to work on documentary films — only to discover he was better on camera than behind it.
He said he seldom feared death, being “ more afraid of not living”.
“I’ve handled the deadliest snakes in the world and I haven’t met a truly aggressive snake yet,” he said. “As far as aggression goes, normal domestic cats are far worse.”
