A few years ago Reptiles Magazine ran a list of the 'Top 10 Serpentariums' in the US. I've tried to relocate this issue, but no luck. I see stuff listed on Herper.com, but without any ratings or reviews of places. If you had to pick one to travel to, a place that's friendly, knowledgeable and has a diverse collection of venomous snakes, which would it be?

I can only speak of one, since its the only one I have visited. The Cape Fear Serpentarium in Wilmington, NC. Its a nice place. If you are in the area, its worth a visit.

Looks like you got yourself a keen interest in hots right now. Cape Fear is a pretty nice place. Alotta people seem to forget about Alligator Adventure. Ive had a good time every time I go.

The Edisto Island Serpentarium in SC is a great place, as the Kentucky Reptile Zoo, and the Black Hills Reptile Gardens.
Many towns have zoos, and some of those have great reptile displays.
It really depends on what part of the country you want to visit, but almost every part of the country has great venomous reptile displays, if you take the time to research it a bit.
Best Regards

I better plug mine...anyone in the Chicago area should check out the best reptile zoo around:

I'll give anyone a personal tour! We may not be the biggest, but we've got an amazing collection of venomous reptiles. And it's free!!

Chas, the Edisto Island Serpentarium has been there 10 years now, and is a great place to visit. It is owned by my friends Heyward and Ted Clamp. They are closed in the winter months, but are open from May to September 5.
Check it out at:

That is really the only serpentarium in South Carolina, however, there are zoos that have good reptile displays, along with other animals.
Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Garden in Columbia is a good one to visit.
There is also Alligator Adventure on Myrtle Beach.
And there is Roark's Reptile Safari in Charleston.
Best Regards

John brings up some fantastic places to check out. Some of our best kept secrets are the small/medium zoos....lots of jewels out there.

If you're in NC, I was really impressed by the small but nice (and well-displayed) collection of snakes at the Natural Science Museum in Durham. They also have a small zoo out back - tigers, meerkats and all - that is very nicely done, plus full-sized dinosaur skeletons and lots of other good stuff inside.
Ditto Cape Fear Serpentarium, Edisto and Riverbanks, which has the only Tomistoma I know of in our neck of the woods (if you're into those). I heard that the zoo in Omaha, Nebraska has a very nice reptile collection, and there's also, of course, Terry Phillips' Black Hills Reptile Institute (but, like Rob's place, it's a little far off my map).
