I DO understand NO pet policy for single soldiers, in case they have to go to war, the pet might be homeless. But if the soldier has family/wife who would take care of the pet, why not.
And why can’t visitors brigan certain dog breeds or species???
I guess OK for a soldier to go to war and get killed in a gun fire, but god forbid he meets a friendly Doberman , wolf hybrid or reptile at the US military base...;-)

Fort Riley has a new pet ownership policy in place - one it says is in line with the Department of the Army's rules.
Starting February first, pit bulls, rottweilers, doberman pinschers, chows and wolf hybrids are not allowed on post. They cannot be owned by people living in the post's residential housing or brought in by visitors.
Any dog exhibiting aggressive behavior is also banned. The post describes such conduct as unprovoked barking, growling, or snarling at people approaching the animal, aggressively running along fence lines when people are present, biting or scratching people and escaping confinement or restriction to chase people.
In addition, exotic animals, including but not limited to reptiles, ferrets, hedgehogs, pot bellied pigs, monkeys, arachnids and farm animals are prohibited in Fort Riley's residential housing.
Residents who currently own such pets may keep them, unless behavior becomes an issue.
Fort Riley garrison commander Col. Richard Piscal says the safety of all Fort Riley residents is the overriding concern for the policy.

Well, this is the same rule that is in place at every military instalation that I have ever been to. Ft. Benning housing wanted me to get rid of my English Bulldog but that wasn't going to happen. They told me I wasn't allowed to have Pittbulls. HA!
