I was told privately than I originate many posts here...hmm, I don't own venomous snakes, I own harmless reptiles including harmless snake...I am mostly monitor, chelonians, big cat and wolf dog (fast cars and bikes and guns)person..
I don't live in the east, I live in SW USA, so I live in venom snake territory, including the Mohave green, but why don’t more folks take initiative to start intelligent topic instead of boring ' what is the most dangerous/beautiful/ugly/sexy/smelly/biggest/smallest/crankiest hot snake???

In large part, what we are seeing in the SHHS forum these days is the reflection of a hobby in its death throes. Aside from the occasional posts regarding potential reclassifications, requests for id's and the like, the forum topics have been gradually narrowing and waning in interest for a long time. I suspect that the issue is not that there are no longer that many people out there who are keeping and consequently encountering the same sort of questions that I have had over the years, though those numbers are certainly declining. I suspect rather that, given the relentless encroachment of exotic/venomous bans, many, if not most (nation wide) are now doing so illegally and don't want to draw attention to themselves. That may well account, at least in part, for the vast discrepancy between the volume of unique hits that the web masters claim versus the tiny number of actual posters. The advocates of these draconian bans, or of excessive and onerous regulation in lieu of outright bans, don't seem to realize that all they are accomplishing is to push the activity underground where it is completely out of control. That, of course, is the universal and inevitable result of bans, the grotesque debacle of prohibition being only the most glaring of numerous recent examples. Alas, the deluded quasi-religious fanatics who advocate bans and think that somehow, with a mass of all pervasive regulation, a perfectly risk free and, in their warped judgement, ideal world will result are totally ignorant of the realities of human nature and existence itself.
I hope I didn't offend too many.

I haven't been posting on this forum long so I can't speak for any dwindling activity. Although I have to say that I think of something I want to ask daily, but I search the archives of this forum before I ask anything. So far, almost all of my questions have been answered months or years ago...

Very interesting topic. As JRB stated, we sure have a lot more folks who visit the forum than who post here.
Perhaps they have learned to use the search feature and find what they want in the past posts. There really is a wealth of information there if someone knows to use various search terms to find the old posts.
A lot of the simplistic questions that we get, like "which snake kills the fastest" are just part of this fascination that new keepers have with learning statistics. Many of them want to appear smart about reptiles, and think they are accomplishing that by accumulating trivia that they can use in conversation.
I guess it works if they talk only with people of the same ability and level in the hobby as themselves. And I am sure the ability to spew out statistics does impress their non reptile keeping friends and families.
The reptile hobby has changes a lot also. In the old days, we had field herpers, and people who worked at museums and zoos. These were all very serious herpers, and thus asked more serious questions here. We still get serious questions from serious herpers.
However, there is this huge new generation of reptile keepers who are far less serious. They start out with bearded dragons and ball pythons, and somewhere in their evolution they progress to larger pythons, and many of them finally want a "hot." This is often not because of a deep fascination with venomous snakes that we here have, but just because it is seen as a next step as a reptile keeper that they must eventually accomplish. Many of those folks do not stay in the hobby for all that long, they move on to other interests, and the snakes are sold or given away. Anyway, because those folks are not serious venomous keepers, they tend to not ask serious questions, until a problem crops up, like the snake they purchased not feeding, or getting sick, etc. Then they come here.
Every day, I hope to see a great intelligent question to appear on the forum. I love getting questions that are a challenge, questions that will make me want to research the topoc so that I can learn new things. Unfortunatly, those are much less common that I wish.
Best Regards
John Z

I personally stopped keeping venomous some time ago, but there's another reason I don't frequent this site as much as I used to, and I'm sure you, Z, can guess it. It seems like more and more, this site is going from a scientifically-minded discussion board of the habits, habitats, and evolution of reptiles to more of a venting and ego stroking place for right wing conservatives to rant about the evil of the liberals. Political topics rarely if ever used to come up when I first started coming here. I'll fully admit I've made some political posts myself, but only in response to something someone else said in his/her own thread that blatantly needed correcting. Most people get turned off by political rantings. Only us masochists actually like discussing politics. And besides, we want credible scientists to continue posting here right? Well everyone knows that the most educated people in the world (namely the scientists) typically swing far to the left :)
Oh and of course the kids who come here to stir up crap from other reptile forums don't help the site's image much either.
Whoever posted that the hobby is dying is probably right, and maybe this forum's decline is just one symptom of that. I suppose all we can do now is sit back and watch it go.

Chance, let me summarize for you what you just did in your whiny post:
-Nobody is preventing you from being the one who starts the intelligent non political topic, are your arms broken? If yes, put a pencil in your mouth and type, better yet, watch this video and stop whining: http://www.maniacworld.com/are-you-going-to-finish-strong.html
- I started this topic hoping somebody would start an interesting topic, I didn’t start it to read another one of yours anti conservative emotionally charged diatribe. It is in fact you who turns the politics of animal ownership topics into social issues racial and homosexual topic.
-yes, we have more animal politics posts lately because the amount and frequency of animal bans is increasing and not enough people are fighting it, Most, like you, just want to whine about people who don’t agree with them
-normally I would take the remark (that the smartest scientist swing to the left ) with humor, but knowing your posting history, it is kind of an insult to many smart people on this forum who happen to hang in the middle or swing to the right or just don’t make it other peoples business how they swing and what they do in the privacy of their own home, libertarians.
-your anti ‘right wing’ tantrums are often worse than the kids that come to this forum you are trying to out down
-if we are banned, aka if captive keeping is banned, there will not be much to discuss about husbandry, you don’t have it, you don’t take care of it, you get removed from mother nature living in the city and you stop caring altogether. Out of sight out of mind

Bans, in theory at least, have nothing to do with 'right' or 'left'. They have to do with ignorance and stupidity, a universal human commodity. If they are not stopped soon, this forum might as well shut down.

By the way. How about "a scientifically-minded discussion" of Gigantophis' such as I proposed elsewhere? Haven't noticed too many responses to that one.

You hit the proverbial "Nail On The Head" with your last post.
Good On You Dude
Put politics aside on both ends Left, Center & Right, and just fight together for the same self preserving reasons.
If I had the money and time I would participate in every Pro-Exotic Association Meeting & Court Hearing that comes down the line, but due to mitigating circumstances its quit impossible at this time.
In closing, let me encourage anyone with the means and time to support these groups that are fighting for your rights.
Reasons i am having to hold off on some of this stuff, is our economic situation in this country and me not finding a Job. Was Laid Off 5 months back, and still no job. Not telling everyone my problems, but just trying to help the cause as much as I can.
By the way Tigers9, can you send me some Email Addresses to contact Officials in areas of interest? Want to at least try and speak my mind and help any way I can with the Exotic Movement.
Be Safe Ya'll, Happy Herping : Wally

Z I am not lazy. When I get off work I am just tired.I do try often to start topics. Some are answered some are not.I am a stone mason very hard and heavy work.I am ALWAYS, ALWAYS looking forward to yours and others posts.I dont view this as a hobby. It is my god given calling to work with animals.I have worked with many.If something interests me I answer the post If it excites me I post it If it angers me I disagree with it.This hobby is not in its death throws. But the bottom line is most of the bad press we have got is due to our hobby entering main stream.Every one who can buy a snake that is deadly should have the right to.That does not mean they should. The political issues and my views are well known. So I wont go there. It is my opinion that If you are a citizen of this grate nation you should be able to do any legal range of things. But then again there lies the problem too damn many laws. Will it ever stop I think not.Teddy Roosevelt loved snakes. So do I......Archie
