hi
i go camping a lot. i live in nj and every time i go campin i see a lot of these brownish black snakes with horizantal brownish stripes on their back. they are very aggressive. they try to bite you and they will come after you sometimes. i am just wondering what this snake is. if anyone has any suggestions i would appriate it. if you do know what it is could you tell me if it is venoumous or not. thank you

i am not tryig to be rude or anything but it is not a gartersnake. i know what they look like and they are not gartersakes. thank you for your reply but i think they are somthing else.

Possibly nerodia or water snake ssp if your anywhere near creeks,ponds,lakes, etc when you camp. Otherwise you have me stumped.

I agree with Jared.Your description matches that of a Northern Water Snake. Water Snakes are nippy and defensive, but they are non-venomous. Anthony-MO
