I strenuously disagree with that statement. If an animal is hurt and damaged by selfish people, that does not make it bad or "worthless". Such abused animals deserve as much or more consideration and care from responsible keepers. I would work as hard to rescue and rehabilitate a venomoid as a hit-by-car snake that was scarred up or missing a rattle. They may never be the show gems of anyone's collection, but they are living creatures deserving of care.

Sorry, Ms. TT - I really didn't mean that literally, and I actually feel the very same way as you do. Just got a little punchy and highly-caffeinated on the keyboard yesterday and the statement was aimed more at people who would perform such mutilations rather than ones who would deal with the results, or the snakes themselves. I have taken on innumerable imperfect and abused snakes (and other things), over more decades than I'd like to admit to, many of which turned out to be all-time special favorites, and have done (and will ever do)the same for venomoids. In fact, I have always been more of a rehabilitator than a collector. The statement was hasty and very poorly worded, I agree, but please do not misinterpret or misjudge my feelings about this on the basis of a stupid post. Of all the abused snakes I have taken in, whether HBC, HBH (Hit by Hoe), neglected captives, rattleless rattlesnakes, etc., the venomoids bother me worse than anything because it is so deliberate and so preventable and most often done by people who would profess to like snakes and actually think they are "improving" them somehow. It just doesn't have to happen, and it shouldn't. I almost paid an obscene amount for a venomoid king a few years ago, but someone else beat me to it. What I suppose I meant was that a lot of these poor creatures end up in the classifieds where most people understandably don't want them, and I certainly can't afford to buy and care for every one I see. Additionally, paying the full, inflated price for a venomoid only encourages those people to go create more of them. It's like trying to save pet shop reptiles from a wretched fate by purchasing them (and I've known a lot of people who can't resist doing that), but the pet shop just gets another one. My apologies.... I seem to be batting pretty low on the posts here lately...
