I am going to be in the Atlanta area from May 22nd through the 25th. My family and I are planning on spending one of those days at six flags. My main interest is to be out looking for reptiles while they are setting around the pool though. Particularly the Rattlesnakes. I have been hunting and photographing the timber rattlers of my home state for about ten years now and would love to have that same opportunity with a wild Eastern while I am down there. What I am hoping for is to hook up with someone familiar with the area to take me out if possible. Or at the least, try to gain some information as to the best places to look. I tried this a couple of years ago in the Fitzgerald area, but unfortunately, the gentleman whom I was to meet had a heart attack prior to my coming down. I came down and looked on my own for two days but had no luck. I am not a herpetologist but would really appreciate any information that you could give me. I am and have always been fascinated by snakes and don't know how long it will take me to get back down your way again. Thanks

I am afraid you won't find any in that area my friend. You need to be little further down, closer to Macon.

Your going to have to travel a good hour east or south of Atl.I've seen them in Wilkes Co.and I've heard that they've been found in Oglethorpe and Putnam Counties but all I've seen there are Canes and Pygmies.

Thanks for the advice. I will gladly make the hour or so drive to get into a good hunting location. A canebrake or Pygmy would be a plus but I am mainly going to be looking for that Eastern. It is just one of those things that I've had in my head for a long time and I won't be content until I track my first one down. Regardless of whether I have any luck though, it will be a great time. The thrill of hunting in unfamiliar terrain and not knowing what you could come accross at any moment is where it's all at. Thanks again!

Be careful, and bring a cell phone with you.But in many areas of rural GA cellphones are useless if you get very far off the interstate. The further east or south you go, the better your odds will get of finding one.

Thanks to everyones advice on this site, I will head as far south as I can and I'll be sure to have a cell phone with me. I have been handling Timbers for over ten years without taking a hit and I sure don't want my first to be from an eastern. No takers on a meet and hunt yet? Lunch is on me..
