Hi,
I've got a 5.5' red tailed boa that is super bright. She is continuing to get even brighter with each shed.
I've had people tell me that she is "just a regular" red tailed boa, people that say she is a light coler red tailed boa, and people who say that the think she's hypo.
She is pictured in my profile pic.
Thanks,
Jon Short

Jon,
I think you have a very attractive common boa.

Boa constrictor imperator--Common Red-tailed Boa
Nice looking snake, but nothing other than a good looking common red tail.

I think the term “true red tail” is a bit of a herpetoculture myth rather than taxonomic fact. Boa constrictors may have vibrantly “red” tails yet not be BCCs and conversely Suriname, Guyana, or Columbian boas may have a less than crimsonesque booty yet that doesn’t change what they are.
Boa constrictor taxonomy has always been rather confusing and in the past, at least, poorly defined and the one thing I can say for sure is the snake in the profile picture while not a BCC, IS a “true” boa constrictor.
