Hi all,
I found this guy enjoying a fine breakfast this morning on the bank of one of our waste water ponds and have not been able to ID it, does anyone recognize this species? The location is northern Iraq about 30 miles west of Mosul.
Thanks in advance,
Tagg

This snake is definitely not one of the 5 know vipers or single cobra species to be indigenous to Iraq. From the size of the body and the size of the scales behind the head (despite eating the frog) it’s possible this is a non-native species of cobra or water snake?

I am not an expert on the snakes from that area of the world but I believe that is a healthy specimen of Natrix tessellata (Dice Snake) which is a nonvenomous water snake found in that area.

I was thinking maybe a Diadem snake, (Spalerosophis diaiema cliffordi) but looking at some more photos, I think I'll agree with Karl on the Dice snake. Take care, Marty
