Mamushis are snakes of the genus Gloydius (formerly part of Agkistrodon) They are pitvipers that are native to Southeast Asia. Terciopelo is the colloquial name for Bothrops asper, part of the group of lanceheads. I recently had the opportunity with a group of friends to search for these animals in Costa Rica. We found three. Easily the most feared snake in the Americas, the ones we caught were surpisingly calm, despite not being very large.
