John, I know some 'dumb' mammals who can't be trained. Most of them Homo sapiens :-)
I remember reading LOOONG way back an article in one of my science books about a guy who trained (conditioned, whatever) sharks to recognize shapes in a bar pressing reward scheme. It was a shock to me at the time that any animal other than a mammal could learn anything. Of course I was probably seven at the time...
Thanks for the tip on presenting the cleaning scoop. I'll bet that will work on some snakes with super strong feeding responses (like Drymarchon)

Well, it will work on rattlesnakes and copperheads.
As far as Drymarchon, they can be pretty dumb when it comes to feeding responses. I have seen them bite themselves mid-body and start chewing like they had found something to eat !
Best Regards

NOT trying to start a friction fight (Z holding white flag), just honestly wondering Karl, how much do you know from personal experience about training show animals?
Really what u read in print is AR propaganda, the same way they lie about NC cobras is the way they lie about show animal training…

<<Circus acts - no.
But training herps to do things to make keeping them easier on both the keeper and the kept - yes.

Z,
I don't know very much at all about how show animals are trained. I do understand how reptiles are "trained" using Operant Conditioning.
My entire post was in regards to herps (reptile) training.
And if some circus is doing an act with an intact King Cobra, then I would tend to believe that would not be very safe.
Just my opinion.

Unfortunately m this is what is going on. Most people have no clue how circus animals are trained, and when AR say it is abusive and needs to get banned, most folks just blindly agree, not thinking about how this might affect their own future and whether it is even the truth.
Then ban on big cats comes, than snakes, etc….again, Joe Public doesn’t see connection to their own lifestyle. But what is really happening, by taking animal industry segment by segment (dividing game), the Ar are getting credibility and respect from public and legislators, after all they/AR are the good guys, right?(insert sarcasm)
By the time the AR is going after harmless pets and agriculture, they have so much power in the community and such close ties with the legislators, and so much money, it is next to impossible to fight them, they have 10-20 years head start on us (animal industry) with having credibility and name recognition with public and legislators.

Z when I worked with tigers I used positive reinforcement love and lots of treats.I have slept in the cage with four tigers and was at the bottom of the cat pile. While workeing them I used a 4 foot pole to tap and point also to push a cat in to place not a weapon never hit a cat period.A playful 120 pound baby grabbed my leg once turned its head and I was on the ground. Most people do not realize the strength even in a 5 month old cub has.Man I miss cats.Love is the only way to be reasonably safe after all these guys are the apex predator. When a tiger says hello he sends out a puff of air that noise alone will make most shi@ there pants. And thats just hello.

Tigers are easy to train, they wnat to please you, that is why you see mostly tigers (and many of them females) in circus acts. Females are energetic/playful, males generally are lazy, male lions are lazy and hard headed, think about it, in the wild women take care of them;-)
