My guess is the snake died and with in a couple of minutes the beetles moved in that is what they do I doubt very much they killed your snake. They do not bother liveing flesh but detect death with in seconds.

Yeah, thats what I thought. Except the snakes were alive with a massive swelling of their sinuses, the first died on its own, the second, I euthanized,(The death of the other was not pleasant to witness) upon dissection I discovered dermastid beetle larvae in the sinus.I only wish I would have photographed the results for verification. Also,I would like to point out that in bat caves they often attack the unfortunate juvenile bats that fall to the floor.

I don't know if it helps but i put sevendust in the bottom of all my cages. You can purchase it at any home and garden store Lowe's Home Depot etc. I've been using it for about 4 years and haven't had any problems with any infestations of any kind. I just sprinkle a little in and mix it with the bedding wait 24 hours and then put snake in and that is it. I have rattlers and have not seen any problems with eating or health. hopes it helps.

Chris, you might want to read the thread posted here a couple of years ago about Sevin Dust.
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/forums/Experts/31612
Although Sevin does kill mites, it can also be harmfull to some snakes.
Best Regards
John Z
