I'm just wondering if anyone would care to explain to me why Gila Monsters and Beaded Lizards are so expensive?
Here's what I know (or think I know...):
-They have been breeding in captivity for atleast 20 years.
-Sexing is difficult, and that you have use an ultrasound or something to get an accurate determination.
-Their clutches aren't particuarly small.
I know that there are a lot of factors that add to the price of an animal, I just can't figure this one out...
Thanks for any responses. =)

No tellin man. Id like to get a pair or trio of both, but for the vast majority of us it is kinda tough to hack up that kinda dough. Funny thing about those guys is the seemingly gradual rise in price over the past few years.

While they have been bred for a while, my understanding is that still only a handfull of people are getting them to breed successfully AND getting the eggs to actually hatch. They're not like ball pythons where anyone can buy a pair and breed them at home in an aquarium.

I know what you mean. I think they're beautiful animals, but that price tag is really hindering me from purchasing any...
I read an article in Reptile Magazine last year (I forget the author) be he mentioned he used to buy them for like $10 each... I'm sure this was before they were protected and they were just wild collected animals.
It does seem that the price would come down the longer they're being bred in captivity... Like in ball morphs, the longer the morph is out, the cheaper it gets...
Maybe a Heloderma guy could clear this up for me...

Larry, we must have been typing at the same time...
I didn't realize they were that tricky, I figured as soon as one person got them to breed they would share their knowledge and then anyone can breed them... I guess that's not the case with these guys... Oh well, thanks for the reply, it's one of those things I've been scratching my head at for a while... ;-)

Heloderma are reluctant to breed. It's not just having the knowledge, it comes down to having individual animals that will breed in captivity.
As with many of the species, the more captive bred that are out there, the better breeding success that will come in the future. Then you will see the prices come down.

If people who live in states where they occur, could breed them, they would have a much greater success. One could simply set up an outdoor enclosure, stick some animals in it , and let nature do the rest. Unfortunately,we just can't do that.

The price has been going down slowly over the last 20 years. They used to be $2,500.00, then went to the $1,500.00 range.
Over time, more have been bred, but they are slow to breed, and do not produce very many eggs.
Most likely, when the retail price gets to $1,000.00, it will stay there for a long time, as there are just not that many of them available.
Best Regards
